Politics Is Not for Rascals — Goodluck Jonathan’s Warning

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has delivered a powerful caution: politics must not be trivialized into a mere playground for disorder and reckless behaviour. Speaking at the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation — which also coincided with his 68th birthday — Jonathan emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy is at risk of being suffocated by irresponsible political conduct.

He argued that true leadership should rest upon three pillars: responsibility, nation‑building, and restraint. Without these, he warned, political actors risk destabilizing the very democratic institutions they claim to defend.

Jonathan further lamented the trend of aggressive rhetoric and hostile political behaviour across Nigeria. This, he said, weakens democratic resilience not just in Nigeria, but across the continent.

Reflecting on his foundation’s mission over the past decade, Jonathan recounted how the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation has concentrated on diplomacy, governance reforms, peacebuilding, mediation, and the fortification of democratic institutions.

He also sounded the alarm over recent violence in Nigeria, including attacks and abductions, calling on political leaders at all levels to take their duty to citizens seriously — to safeguard lives while upholding democratic order.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu at the event, paid tribute to Jonathan’s legacy. He singled out Jonathan’s 2015 concession of defeat a turning point that, in his view, preserved Nigeria from potential crisis.

Shettima also praised Jonathan’s post-presidency role, noting that his continued commitment to public service and democratic values has made him one of Africa’s most respected statesmen.

Meanwhile, Taminu Turaki, newly elected PDP national chairman, commended the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation for its impact across Africa — highlighting its work in conflict resolution, democracy strengthening, and peacebuilding.

The foundation’s Executive Director, Ann Iyonu, offered a heartfelt reflection on their decade-long journey. She emphasized the resilience, purpose, and grace that have guided their mission to build a continent where peace thrives and democratic institutions are strong.

Jonathan’s message was simple but profound: “Politics is not for rascals. It is for people who want to build, not destroy.”
